You may already be familiar with Olympiad events from Maths and the sciences. Linguistics Olympiad events use language data to solve logic problems. Events like these are currently held in Australia, the UK, the USA and 26 other countries. Students of any age can take part but the questions will be most appropriate for those in years 11-13.
Why should I take part?
Taking part in a competition such as this is (usually!) fun but it also gives you the chance to get better at analysis and logical thinking. Because Linguistics isn't offered as a subject in school, this means anyone with an interest in language or logic can take part - you don't need to know anything about linguistics to give it a try. In fact, one of the reasons we think you'll like it is that it isn't like anything you will have done in school before!
