FAQs

Do I need to know many languages?

No. You do not need to speak multiple languages to participate. All information needed to solve the problems is provided in the competition materials. Success depends on logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and curiosity rather than language background.

 

Do I need to study linguistics before joining?

No. Prior knowledge of linguistics is not required. NZLO is designed for secondary-school students who enjoy solving puzzles and exploring how languages work.

 

Who can participate?

NZLO is open to students in Years 11–13 enrolled in secondary schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. Future editions may expand participation opportunities as the programme develops.

 

Is the competition in English?

Yes. NZLO is administered in English. However, the competition explores languages from around the world, and participants do not need to know those languages beforehand.

 

How are winners selected?

Participants are assessed based on the accuracy and quality of their solutions. Awards and certificates are determined according to the competition's scoring and moderation procedures.

 

Will certificates and awards be provided?

Yes. Participants will receive certificates, and outstanding performances may be recognised through awards and other academic opportunities.

 

What happens after the National Round?

Top-performing students may be invited to participate in advanced training activities and future selection opportunities as NZLO develops its national and international pathways.

 

Is NZLO connected to the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL)?

NZLO is being developed with the long-term goal of creating opportunities for New Zealand students to engage with regional and international linguistics olympiads. Further details will be announced as the programme develops.
