About US

The New Zealand Linguistics Olympiad (NZLO) is a national competition for students who enjoy languages, puzzles, logic, and problem-solving.

Participants are challenged to investigate unfamiliar languages, decipher writing systems, discover hidden patterns, and solve linguistic puzzles using reasoning and creativity. Much like a mathematical puzzle, success depends not on prior knowledge, but on careful observation, logical thinking, and curiosity.

All information needed to solve the problems is provided in the competition. Students do not need to have studied linguistics or speak multiple languages before participating.

NZLO introduces students to the fascinating science of language while helping them develop analytical reasoning, critical thinking, communication skills, and confidence in tackling unfamiliar challenges.

The competition is open to secondary-school students throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and is designed to encourage broad participation, intellectual curiosity, and a lifelong interest in language and language science.

NZLO is organised as a non-profit educational initiative dedicated to promoting linguistic problem-solving and academic enrichment for young people across New Zealand.
