How to Register for NZLO
A Guide for School Coordinators
Schools participating in the New Zealand Linguistics Olympiad must nominate a teacher or staff member to act as the School Coordinator.
The School Coordinator is responsible for registering the school, entering participating student details, checking the final student list, and receiving important competition updates.
Students should not create their own NZLO accounts or register independently.
Step 1: Create Your Teacher Account
Click the button below to create an account on the NZLO Teacher Portal.
Create a Teacher Account
Enter your name, school email address and password, then click Sign Up.
Please use your official school email address wherever possible.
New teacher accounts may need to be reviewed and approved by the NZLO team before access to the Teacher Portal is granted.
Step 2: Complete Your Profile
Once your account has been approved, log in to the NZLO Teacher Portal.
From the Dashboard, select Profile and complete your contact information.
Please provide:
-
Full name
-
Position or role
-
School email address
-
Contact phone number
-
Preferred contact details
Click Save Changes after completing your profile.
Please ensure that your information remains accurate, as all competition notices and administrative updates will be sent to the registered School Coordinator.
Step 3: Register Your School
From the Teacher Portal, select School.
Enter your school information, including:
-
School name
-
School address
-
City or region
-
School website
-
Estimated number of participating students
-
Alternative school contact, if applicable
Your school may be assigned an NZLO School Code after registration.
Click Save Changes once all required fields have been completed.
Each school should normally nominate one primary School Coordinator to manage registrations.
Step 4: Add Your Students
Select Students from the Teacher Portal menu.
Enter the estimated number of students who are likely to participate, then add each student individually.
For each student, complete the required fields, including:
-
Legal first name
-
Legal family name
-
Preferred name, if applicable
-
Year level
-
Student email address
-
Accessibility or special arrangement requirements, if applicable
-
Consent confirmation
Click Add Student after completing each student’s details.
Student information will be saved to your school account. You can continue adding students until the registration deadline.
Please check the spelling of each student’s name carefully, as this information may be used for examination records, results and certificates.
Step 5: Review Your Registration
Before the student registration deadline, return to the following sections:
-
Profile
-
School
-
Students
Check that:
-
your contact details are correct;
-
your school information is complete;
-
all participating students have been entered;
-
student names and year levels are accurate;
-
duplicate or withdrawn students have been removed; and
-
any accessibility requirements have been recorded.
When your student list is complete, select:
Confirm Final Student List
After confirmation, the NZLO team will review your school registration and prepare the participating students for the online competition.
Congratulations — you have now registered yourself, your school and your students for NZLO.

registering the school;

entering and checking student information;

communicating NZLO instructions to participating students;
-
distributing student login details securely;
-
confirming the final student list;

notifying NZLO of withdrawals or changes;

arranging suitable school supervision where required; and

reporting any examination incidents or technical difficulties.
The School Coordinator does not need to mark student work or submit scores.
On the Competition Day
Students will complete the NZLO competition online at the scheduled time.
Schools may be asked to provide:
-
a suitable room;
-
a computer or compatible device for each student;
-
a stable internet connection;
-
a supervising teacher or authorised staff member; and
-
assistance with student identity and attendance checks.
Detailed competition-day instructions will be provided to registered School Coordinators before the competition.
Results and Certificates
Once marking and moderation have been completed, School Coordinators will be able to access their school’s results through the NZLO Teacher Portal.
Depending on the final portal functions, coordinators may also be able to:
-
view student results;
-
download a school results summary;
-
download student certificates; and
-
view information about progression to the next stage.
Individual results will only be available after they have been formally released by NZLO.
Changing the School Coordinator
If another teacher will take over responsibility for NZLO at your school, please do not share your personal password.
Contact the NZLO team or use the Change School Coordinator function in the Teacher Portal.
You may be asked to provide:
-
the new coordinator’s name;
-
their position;
-
their official school email address; and
-
confirmation that they are authorised to manage the school’s NZLO registration.
NZLO will then transfer access to the new School Coordinator.
