Competition Divisions
NZLO is open to all students enrolled in New Zealand schools from Year 1 to Year 13. International schools are also welcome to participate. Students may enter a higher division if recommended by their school.
The Advanced division is the main pathway for Training Pool, camp selection, Team NZ preparation, and future International Linguistics Olympiad opportunities.
Competition Format
Selected students are invited to the next stage based on performance, with advanced students moving toward training camp, Team NZ, and international representation.

Registration Opens
Schools, students, and families register interest for the new NZLO season.

Round 1 / Competition
Students complete division-appropriate linguistics puzzles through school or approved sittings.

September
National Finals
Selected students progress to the national final and awards process.
February 2027
Training Camp
Advanced students join intensive preparation for selection and international-style problem solving.
April 2027
Delegation Workshop
Selected students join a final workshop to strengthen teamwork and prepare to represent New Zealand internationally.
Mid 2027
National Team
Students selected for Team NZ will represent New Zealand at the international competition.
